Abominations to the Lord

Abominations to the Lord

Meaning of abomination in Biblical terms…

Things that are an abomination to the Lord are the opposite of his teachings.  In simple terms, they are sinful ways, thus they are abhorrent to him.  We could say they are man’s ways, not God’s ways.

Where abominations are found in the Bible…

Proverbs 6:  16 – 19 names six things that the Lord hates:  seven that are an abomination to him: *a proud look, *a tongue that lies, *hands that shed innocent blood, *a heart that plans wickedness, *feet that run to mischief, *witnessing falsely by speaking lies, *and those who sow discord, causing division.

Proverbs 17: 15 tells of those who are complicit even though they do none of the above:  *those who justify the wicked, *those who condemn the just are an abomination to the Lord.

Proverbs 12: 19 – 22 names lying lips, deceitful hearts, wickedness and evil plans, slothfulness, spreading foolishness, deliberately causing sadness and darkness are abominations to the Lord while those who tell truths, spread peace and joy, grasp knowledge, work diligently, speak positive words and actions are his delight.

Proverbs 15: 26 says thoughts of the wicked are an abomination while pure words are pleasing.

Proverbs 11: 1 speaks to the courts and trying to throw things off balance: false balance is an abomination, just weight is a delight.

Proverbs 28: 9 the prayer of one who closes his ears to the law is an abomination.

Deuteronomy 7: 15 names graven images and coveting the silver or gold in them as abominations.

Luke 16: 15 Jesus says of those who justify themselves to men that God knows what is in the heart.  Those who are held in high regard among men are detestable to God

God has said this in modern terms – relating it to what is going on today where the wicked and devious ones are being honored:  “What is considered an honor on earth, might not be considered an honor in heaven.  Awards on earth do not equate to awards in heaven.”  In other words, many who are held in high regard by man are detestable to God who knows what is in their hearts.

1 Corinthians 6: 9 – 11 relates that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God.  The unrighteous are named:  idolaters, adulterers, abusers, thieves, those who covet, drunkards, merrymakers, extortioners.  On a more positive side, the pathway to the inheritance is to give up your abhorrent ways and give your hearts to God.

Mark 7: 20 – 23 adds to the above that whatever proceeds out of man, defiles man:  evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, foolishness.

Revelation 21: 8 tells what will happen to the unbelievers, cowards, murderers, immoral, those who worship idols, and liars and it is not pleasant.

Self-evaluation…

Re-read the above and know they come directly from the Bible.  Give serious consideration to those things that are an abomination to the Lord.  Be truthful in determining if you are guilty of one or more of these sins. God knows what is in your heart.  (Reread what Proverbs 17: 15 above says about being complicit if you justify or support the wicked or if you condemn the just.  Have you called the guilty innocent and the innocent guilty?)   If you determine you are guilty, then decide what you are going to do about it.  Remember:  you are making a forever-after decision.  Which sounds more appealing to you – an everlasting life spent in the place described in Revelation 21: 8 or in the place that God has prepared for you?

Free Choice…

The choice is yours to makeGod will not threaten you, twist your arm, issue Goddates.  He simply tells you what the abominations to him are, what you must do to change, and the forever-after consequences of your decision.  You may have earthly judgments, but you will not know your Heavenly judgment until after your last earthly breath is drawn.  There will be no do-overs, no chance to make needed changes.  Your last earthly breath begins your eternal life.  You might say you are already on the path to your eternal life.  A word to the wise:  Begin making needed changes now.

God’s desire

God desires a relationship with you.  You are his creation, and he loves his creation.  He will not give up on you.
